HEADLINES

Facebook Testing New Timeline Design: The layout of Timeline has frustrated brands and users who find the back-and-forth columns confusing. The new design showcases a one-column status bar with a small right-side bar for friends and recent activity.

Sandy’s Instagram: The Frankenstorm that seized this East Coast earlier this week brought a new meaning to the use of social media to communicate. One of the best examples has been the use of Instacane, a website that originally launched during Hurricane Irene and aggregates Instagram photos posted to a hashtag on Twitter.

MUSINGS

Facebook Is Making Brands More Like You: Brands have struggled with the evolving format of Facebook, which has made it harder to reach and engage with fans. Creating compelling content that can compete with friends and family’s posts and still seem relevant and non-intrusive has changed the way brands think about “advertising” through social. [AllFacebook]

Advertisers Are Still Missing the Mark With Online Video: Agencies are focused on two types of online videos — branded content and pre-roll ads. What opportunities in search, website videos and native video advertising are we missing? [Advertising Age]

The Key To The Holiday Sales War? Winning The Social-Media Battle: The lines between in-store and online shopping have become blurred, and retailers will feel this even more in the upcoming holiday season. 32 percent of consumers research a product online, visit the store to view the product and then return to online stores to complete the purchase, and 66 percent of Black Friday purchases in 2011 were the result of social media interactions. Learn how retailers can create a social media plan that will make the holiday shopping season full of cheer. [Fast Company]

The Mobile Mini: As expected, Apple announced the introduction of a 7.9 inch tablet — the iPad Mini. The Mini’s size, portability and price point will bridge the gap between the on-the-go use of smartphones and the laid-back reading and browsing style of iPad users. (Check out these tips for designing for the new screen size.)

Like and Star: Twitter has been testing out new “Star” and “Like” buttons for the service and may use this metric in its expanding advertising program.

MUSINGS

7 Reasons to Consider Print for Your ‘Non-Traditional’ Content Strategy: Newsweek’s announcement to end it’s weekly print edition has some continuing to hammer the “print is dead” line. And a new study shows that for every $1 gained in digital revenue, more than $7 are lost in print. So how will a smaller and more focused print industry provide opportunities for marketers? The author argues that with the onslaught of digital communication, brands will find more opportunities when reaching the unplugged readers of a dying industry. [Content Marketing Institute]

User Vs. Customer: Does It Matter?: Founder of Square, Jack Dorsey, sent an email to Square’s staff banning the word “user” — favoring “consumer” instead in order to showcase the company’s dedication to its buyers and sellers. The author finds that it is a jagged road to define the user of a free product/service or even a user/consumer that purchases a product. While these words are necessary, are they even important if the company treats its users and consumers in a way that’s human? [Forbes]

For Brands, 2012 Is The Year Of The Story. So Who’s Telling It Best?: Storytelling and brand journalism has been the topic of the year in advertising. It’s the basis for content marketing and driving conversations through social media. Pushing advertising at consumers online doesn’t create engagement, but does dressing advertising up as a story really that much more effective? Go beyond the brand story and use the lessons of storytelling to create a dialogue. [Fast Company]

Creatives: Do You Really need Your Own Agency?: Co-founder of Pereira & O’Dell, P.J. Pereira has started two agencies and sold one, yet he gives advice on why starting your own agency may not be the best path. It’s lonely at the top and there’s little recognition or praise for the people at the top. Being an entrepreneur means also having to ignore your creative side and focus more on management — less producing actual work and more hand-holding for creatives. Pereira writes, “It’s time for us to make legends out of some great writers, art directors and creative directors that never got their names on the doors, simply because they had no patience for that kind of thing.” [Advertising Age]

Responsive Comping: Obtaining Signoff with Mockups: How many times have you delivered website comps and wireframes for a client review and spent hours explaining how the site would function? What hover states would look like or how visitors would use the site. For many clients it can be difficult to visualize the final product that they are signing off on. Matt Griffin of Bearded explains how to get away from Photoshop and use in-browser design. [A List Apart]

Dark Social: We Have the Whole History of the Web Wrong: Sharing links and information on the web was not a result of the creation of Twitter and Facebook. Email, instant messages, chat rooms and a host of other services made the web social long before the invention of what we now call the social web. The author revisits the history of social sharing and explains how there is still a vast number of visitors to your site that come through something called “dark social.” Many media sites are reporting that 69 percent of social referrals are through the dark social web, while only 6 percent of referrals come from Twitter and Facebook accounts for 20 percent. The author argues that we need to change our thinking of the history of the social web. The ability to share links in exchange for vast amounts of personal information may not be a fair trade for some. [The Atlantic]

Pinterest Design Influences: EBay continued its brand overhaul with updates to its layout, search functionality, product pages and payment system.

Wishing and Wanting and Collecting: Facebook launched a new service for select retail partners that allows fans to click a Want or Collect button on products. Fans will then be able to add these products to a Wishlist. While Facebook won’t be charging brands for the service, it may provide the social network with additional advertising opportunities with these brands who are looking to integrate social and e-commerce further.

Searching for Tweets: Twitter continues to make its site more search-engine friendly by adding a directory of accounts.
Untargeted Content Marketing: Content marketing and the buzz surrounding the discipline have prompted many companies to increase the amount of content created and shared. But has the focus on having something to share outweighed what is being shared? Content/product disconnect is plaguing brands that look for ways to target consumers through content.
Advertising is Dying. Long Live Design: The internet has made brand interaction and communication more transparent. So while advertising can reach a consumer through social, mobile, TV, print and a multitude of different ways, there is also more opportunities for consumers to call bullshit if the promises don’t match up. Focus on design — the experience, product and service. Advertising won’t save a company that fails to deliver on these elements. [A Version of Events]

Twitter Dominates Live TV Because Social TV is Failing: While research shows that people are using their laptops, mobile devices and tablets while watching TV, it doesn’t prove that viewers want to devote a second screen to social TV apps. The author writes, “What does ‘synchronous experience’ mean to the average user? What about the concept of ‘flinging things from second screen to TV’? Or, let’s take another step back: do regular everyday users even understand the term ‘social TV’?” Creating an experience that will make social TV a success will depend on if companies understand what and how users want to watch TV in the future.
HEADLINES

Zuckerberg Admits Mistakes: At TechCrunch Disrupt on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg took the stage to discuss disappointment in the IPO, but added that the company will transition to a mobile advertising company as it has done away with its investments in HTML5 for a fully native mobile application. Facebook stock increased 7.7 percent on Wednesday.

100 Million Users and a Redesigned Mobile Web Experience: After the announcement that Instagram now boasts 100 million users and more than 5 billion photos have been shared, the company updated its mobile photo pages. Users can now like and comment within the browser, and an option to view the photo in Instagram has been added.

Anonymous and Accuracy: On Monday, millions of individuals with websites hosted through GoDaddy experienced a service outage of about six hours. While a member of the hacker group Anonymous initially claimed credit for the downtime, GoDaddy’s CEO Scott Wagner issued a statement that internal events caused the outage and offered a one-month credit to customers.

In the age of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and even Pinterest, the author states that, “How we remember is just as important as what we remember.” How are you using these new tools to create experiences that mean more than status updates? Consumers that have a Passbook-coded coupon will be sent a push notification if they walk by a pre-determined set of locations. Retail and businesses looking to drive foot traffic will be able to capitalize on this location-based marketing tool to drive sales and specials. Just in time for the holiday season. [AdWeek]

HEADLINES

Tweet Timeline: Twitter launched a new feature allowing websites to embed a tweet timeline using a simple line of HTML code. Viewers can reply to or retweet an update directly from the timeline, view expanded photos and follow specific hashtags in any timeline. [The Verge]

LinkedIn Company Pages: Redesigned company pages began to appear yesterday, as LinkedIn continues to overhaul its site. The new pages will include a large photo at the top and a more prominent follow button. Updates will no longer appear from newest to oldest; an algorithm will sort updates based on relevance to the viewer. [TechCrunch]

Facebook Timeline: On Monday, Facebook Timeline for brand pages reached its six-month mark. With an emphasis on photos and videos, friend activity and customized content features, brand pages now showcase a story rather than a corporate landing page. How has Timeline changed your interaction with fans? [AllFacebook]

MUSINGS

Why I Need to Know Your Budget: In the market for a Dodge St. Regis R-body? Hopefully not, but buying cars and buying design may not be all that different. Agencies should help a client to define a budget and find out the brand’s “must have” features and goals (four cup holders is non-negotiable). Otherwise, we’ll all waste time test-driving and debating something that is simply out of our reach. [Mule Design]

Words I Hate: Ideate, deliverable, essence, integration, synergy, transmedia, monetize — say that five times fast. As professionals who excel in the art of communication, do we spend our time speaking non-sense? Martin Weigel of Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam provides a great word list of modern adspeak. [Canalside View]

More Than a Few Words on Digital Marketing: As the debate on the definition of digital continues, Bud Caddell puts forth his thoughts on how to understand it all. Participation, real-time feedback, “ghetto testing” and the ability to self-select provides advertisers with an opportunity to make marketing that consumers want. Trying to define digital may be the only constant in the unpredictable digital marketing world. [What Consumes Me]

On Hold Jam Session

“Please stay on the line. Your approximate wait time is 43 minutes.” Billboard doesn’t want you to waste those minutes cursing at the phone. It sent direct mail pieces allowing individuals to avoid the monotonous on-hold music.

Did You See?

- Web series are going to be the future solution to television network problems with the capability of reaching the world instantly and at a much cheaper price.

Catch Up

Setting the Digital Course Forward [Winston Binch]: “Just because we’re in the business of advertising doesn’t mean we always have to make ads. The most powerful marketing experiences start with the product. And sometimes the best way to solve a marketing problem is through ancillary product or platform invention. Most advertising briefs have a problem attached to them. They also have a deliverable list. Deliverables shouldn’t be ignored but start by trying to solve the problem by any idea necessary. And in a connected world, many of the best ideas are rooted in digital experience.”

Amazon’s Zappos Combines Pinterest and E-Commerce In New Site [Bloomberg]: “Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)’s Zappos online store has created a service that recommends purchases based on what users post on Pinterest, a move to parlay the popularity of the social-sharing site into e-commerce sales. The new Web page, created by a team at Zappos Labs in San Francisco, is called PinPointing and suggests Zappos products, such as shoes, dresses and swimsuits, based on Pinterest posts. Consumers can see suggestions that correlate with their own personal pins or those of other Pinterest users.”

Americans Are Still Clueless about the Cloud [Mashable]: “This survey clearly shows that the cloud phenomenon is taking root in our mainstream culture, yet there is still a wide gap between the perceptions and realities of cloud computing,” said Kim DeCarlis, vice president of corporate marketing at Citrix. “While significant market changes like this take time, the transition from the PC era to the cloud era is happening at a remarkable pace.”

The Power of Words in Brand Marketing [Star Group]: “In communications, creativity is paramount; it’s what separates one agency from another. Without distinct ideas and a fresh approach, the messages we communicate become stale and yield mediocre results. As an intelligent man once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” So, use your words wisely.”
